Mr. Ryan Colburn, Principal
Ryan Colburn serves as principal of Leawood Middle School. With over 25 years of experience in education, he brings a deep passion for student growth and a commitment to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment. Colburn began his career as a mathematics teacher and coach and has spent the last several years serving in school leadership as an assistant principal.
A proud third-generation Jayhawk, Colburn earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Kansas. He also holds two master’s degrees from Baker University—one in school leadership and another in education.
Colburn enjoys working with middle school students and values the opportunity to help guide them through a formative period of their academic and personal development. He believes in being present in hallways and classrooms to build connections with students and to support the learning happening across the school.
Outside of school, Colburn enjoys running, traveling, spending time with his family, and watching sports. He and his wife have been married for 25 years and have two children. Their daughter is continuing her pharmacy studies at KU, and their son is a freshman at KU studying finance and sports management with a minor in data science.
Colburn looks forward to getting to know Leawood students and families and is proud to be part of the Eagle community.

Mr. Reese Sperfslage
Reese Sperfslage is in his seventh year at Leawood Middle School and his second year as assistant principal. Prior to entering administration, he taught physical education at Leawood Middle for five years. He also spent time teaching math and social studies at Overland Trail Middle School. While teaching, he proudly served as the head football coach for Leawood and also coached boys’ and girls’ basketball. He loves being part of the Leawood community and looks forward to continuing to get to know families in the years to come.
When he is not at school, Sperfslage enjoys spending time with his wife, Maddie, and their son, Rory (2), who makes everything more fun. They like to travel and stay active, spending as much time outdoors as they can. As a proud Iowan, he is an avid sports fan who loves the Iowa Hawkeyes and all things football. He received his B.S. in education from Iowa State University and his master’s in school education leadership from Pittsburg State University.
Sperfslage believes Leawood is a place where all students can have the best middle school experience possible. His goal is always to involve students in as many activities and extracurricular opportunities as he can. Nothing is more enjoyable to him than watching students find their passions and share them with others, and he believes Leawood provides outstanding opportunities for students to do just that.
